Another week, another dollar – and another crop of new high scores, fastest times, and personal bests! On top of that, we welcomed new gamers who immediately made a big impression with some big gaming achievements. So for this installment, we have beer on tap, a chance of asteroid showers, aerial dogfights, some cool skateboard tricks, and a globe-trotting puzzle quest, so read on!
Tracey Gleave - Tapper (Arcade) – Points
At the Arcade Club Bury, the beer mugs were flying as Tracey Gleave served up a fantastic score on Bally/Midway's iconic 1984 release Tapper. Competing in the Yolympics - a multi-game, team-based, online MAME/Arcade high score competition - Tracey hit the glitch screen in all 3 rollovers and finished the third loop of the game. But with closing time approaching, Tracey had to end her 5-hour run with an impressive 3,051,325 points.
SJM – Asteroids Deluxe (Arcade) – Points
SJM earned his first TG world record in spectacular fashion on Atari's epic 1980 release Asteroids Deluxe. As a teenager in the '80s, SJM earned over a million points on his family's arcade cabinet but then it broke down and sat unused in his parent's basement for the next 35 years. But thanks to a friend, the game came back to life and SJM revisited his quest for the world record. Then on January 28, SJM started out what ended up as an 8 hour game where he rolled the score three times to finish with a new record of 3,458,840 points. Congratulations!
Rotunda – Air Combat (Arcade) – Points
Rotunda's local arcade came through by offering him the chance to play on the rare 1992 Namco combat flight simulator Air Combat. Tasked with destroying enemy fighter jets before the timer expires, Rotunda had a “lock and load” mission that ended with an inaugural score of 18,050 points.
nineties pt – Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PlayStation 2) – Farthest Distance
nineties pt took a break from grand larceny on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for the PS2 with a little R&R at the airport. Racing on his bike, he hit the brakes to see if he could hit a new personal best “stoppie distance” by skidding on his front wheel. After a few runway attempts, nineties pt hit the mark with a record distance of 815 feet.
RetroBorg – Tetris Plus 2 (M.A.M.E.) – Points
For his first submission, RetroBorg went on a puzzle safari that took him around the world and ended with a new Twin Galaxies World Record. Competing on the Jaleco 1997 release Tetris Plus 2, RetroBorg completed all 16 stages of the game by clearing a path through the blocks for the hapless CPU character to exit at the bottom of the screen that culminated with a final score of 1,645,900 points, beating the previous world record by 100k. Congratulations!
This covers our Scoreboard Spotlight for this week. As a reminder, these were just a few of exceptional records that were adjudicated and accepted recently. Every record that made it through verification and landed on our leaderboards has a well-deserved place in the Twin Galaxies gaming pantheon.
Keep scoring high, finishing fast, and game on!
